Gabriela’s modeling journey started when she was just 17 in Spain. Over the years, she’s built a career that’s taken her to incredible places, working with brands like Apple, ASOS, Adidas, Reebok, and Lipton. This shoot, however, was something entirely different—this time, we got to work together for Icon Models Australia, her agency here, and it felt deeply personal.

It’s been over nine years since Gabriela and I spent significant time together. I moved to Australia when she was just 15, and life naturally led us in different directions. So this photoshoot wasn’t just about taking pictures—it was about catching up, laughing, and rediscovering the connection we’ve always shared.

That morning, we wandered around, looking for the perfect spot. Our neighbours in Kirra kindly offered their sunlit white wall, which turned out to be the dreamiest backdrop. The light was golden, Gabriela was glowing, and the atmosphere was just right—relaxed, playful, and full of creativity.

BEING A “CURVY”

Gabriela has always been open about her journey as a curvy model, which hasn’t been without its challenges. During a quiet moment in the shoot, she shared:

"When I started, there weren’t many models who looked like me. It felt like I had to prove myself all the time. But now, the industry is changing, and it’s amazing to see more diversity and space for all kinds of beauty."

She admitted, though, that even with progress, there are still moments of doubt. "There have been photoshoots and TV spots where I felt completely out of place. Many times, I was the only curvy model or the only one who didn’t fit the usual stereotypes. I sometimes wonder if brands hire models of different ethnicities, colours, or body shapes because they genuinely care about diversity—or if it’s just to tick a box and boost sales."

Her honesty is what makes her such a powerful advocate for change in the industry.

It captured Gabriela’s strength and individuality while also giving us a chance to reconnect as sisters.
